Jacob hit his first over the fence home run last night. Lemme see if I can give you the break down. First of all, our little team has been struggling this season. We've had some good plays and hits but this was the first night that everyone was "on". Our first five batters got on base, three of which had already scored when Jacob came up to bat. Then he stroked that first pitch from his Daddy and the ball went what looked to be a mile high in the air. At first I thought it was going to be just a high pop fly but then it just kept going. And going. And going. And it was gone! From that point on I don't really remember everything. I just remember running to the dugout and waiting at the gate before he ever reached third base. He was sooo excited, not to mention me and Michael. He said later that when he got to first base, Coach Robby told him to make the turn and he realized that he hit it over the fence when he saw the outfielders turn around and throw up their hands like "where's the ball?". He said then he just started "a joggin".

We ended up winning the game 21-6. It was our best game all season and all the kids got a hit. The kids really had a great time.

And just a side note: the excitement around the first home run I was prepared for but I was not prepared for all of the cash and prizes. Money. Gum. Candy. Who knew going yard could be so lucrative?

Another note: The top picture is not of the hr stroke. I was too busy keeping the book to be taking pictures. Plus, even if I would've had my camera ready I wouldn't have even been able to take the pic. I was shaking so hard that I couldn't even write, much less take a picture.

Cuties!

Look at these two cuties. This is the first day that she has been back at school for 6 school days. My older sister came in from San Francisco last Sunday for a week long visit and she stayed with us the following two nights.

Today as Madison and I (Daddy) were going to school, we had the following conversation:

Maddie: Who gonna stay with JoJo (my sister, JoLene)
Daddy: No one, baby. She is old enough to stay by herself.
Maddie: No she not.
Daddy: Yes, baby, she is older than daddy is.
Maddie: But she not old enough to stay by herself.
Daddy: Yes, baby, she is.
Maddie: No she not. She not reach the batteries.
Daddy (holding back laughter): She can't reach the batteries?
Maddie: No.
Daddy: So she is not old enough because she cannot reach the batteries?
Maddie: No
Daddy: What about mommy? Jacob? Gum? Poppa? Grand?
Maddie: No. No. No. No. No. I not old enough enough either.
Daddy: So daddy is the only one old enough to stay by himself.
Maddie: Yes.

And with that we ended up at Preschool. Just another slice of the comedic talent from our two year old.

The Big K

And I don't mean K-Mart. Kindergarten! WOW! Can't believe it is here. For a while there I thought that I was more excited about it than Jacob. But last night I could tell that he was about to explode. This morning he was very impatient with the traffic, even wanted to know why the cars in front of us wouldn't just go ahead and turn so he could get to school. He lead us in the school, walking about 10 feet in front of us, turning around only to let us know that he could see his class room. He walked in the room like the big kindergartener that he is and sat down at his table and started going through his things.

Before we got out of the car I asked him what was going to be the funniest part of kindergarten and he said picking out my lunch and punching in my lunch number. We will see if that has changed this afternoon. Besides trying to keep them quietly entertained, I am also trying to get them involved in the whole big experience in some little ways they can hopefully understand. Like letting them put money in the collection plate and explaining to them that they are giving their money to God. I have been giving them each a dollar to hold on to and at the right time, put in the plate. Now Jacob would prefer that I give him coins over dollars any day, don't know why but for some reason he thinks the change is better. But coins would bring on a whole new set of problems, so I stick with the paper. Anyway, a couple of Sundays ago at the beginning of church I give Jacob and Madison their money. Jacob folds up his dollar and tucks it into his pocket. Madison, wanting to do exactly what her big brother does, takes her money and rolls it up in this half crooked fold and begins to search frantically for her pocket. When she doesn't find one, she does what any good southern young lady would do, she stuffs it in the front of her dress and then goes about her coloring. While I am doing the church snicker, I flash back to Sunday mornings as a kid with my grandmother when she would stuff her tithe in the front her dress, along with her house keys. Who knew you could put so much stuff up there with out it looking awkward? Guess Madison gets that from Mama Pearl.

May the Force Be With You

A couple of weekends ago, a friend of ours scored us some sweet tickets to the Barons game. We usually go to a couple games each year but this time was a little unusual. Michael told me earlier in the week that there was going to be some type of Star Wars thing going on that night at the stadium and all I could picture in my head was the time that we went to Atlanta and stayed in the same hotel as the Star Trek convention. Everyone was dressed up as their favorite character. It was a little odd to say the least. So I immediately think that folks will be dressed up as Yoda and Darth Vader. Well not everyone, just my sweet, Star Wars obsessed 5 year old. He wanted to wear the whole costume but it was five hundred degrees outside so I talked him into only wearing the mask and cape. He was a little Star struck (pun intended) when he saw the real DV. He wouldn't even get his picture made with him. I was able to get a picture of him and a Storm Trooper but only because the ST let Jacob see his gun.

It was a lot of fun. They did some really cool Star Wars themed things with the lineup on the jumbotron. DV even threw out the first pitch. We had a great time. We came out of the gate and scored 6 runs and shut out Gardendale in the first inning. In the second, we put an additional 7 runs on the board and then there was no turning back. The final score was 25-10 in 5 innings. It was a great ending to a very happy birthday for me. Thanks to everyone who came out to lend their support and thanks to those who didn't show up because they had been banned from the park. I won't mention any names, but her initials are Tesney D. The only game we lost in the post season Tesney was in attendance so we barred her from any more games. Tes, I am sorry that you missed this, though.

My only regret from the tournament - not getting a picture of the redneck megaphone one of the opposing teams moms was using to cheer on her team. It was a what appeared to be the inside cardboard of a rather large roll of wrapping paper. It was about four foot long and had a crook on the end. She would cheer on her team and then turn around to the stands to lead them in an organized cheer all the while being very careful not to warp someone in the head. Obviously she was reliving some fantasy of being head cheerleader for her high school football team. It was a sight.

Maddie - The Preschooler

With all of the baseball that has been going on over the last month I almost forgot to document Madison's first day of preschool. Things didn't start out very good. But we came back and tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning. The next inning Walker County scored two runs to beat us 17-15. The Nationals played two games Saturday and won both games. Then Sunday we had to play Walker County twice in order to win the whole thing. Big Blue came out strong in the first game to win 25-11. And the second game of the doubleheader was even better. Something just clicked and we played like we have been playing ball together all year. The final score was 22-0 in four innings! There were double plays, fly balls caught, good base running and the bats were as hot as the weather. It was a great ending to a wonderful Father's Day. The guys (and girl) were so excited about getting their trophies and playing in the tent sprinklers. Here are the pictures from the tournament. We've just gotten over the last Cali trip. It's one of those places that make you appreciate where your from. I mean they don't have ANY sweet tea or county music!!! The lyrics to that Hank song "If Heaven ain't a lot like Dixie" come to mind. I really don't know how I survived. I LIVE on sweeeeet tea and their idea of sweet tea was this raspberry flavored tea-like water. I told the waiter that what he had brought me was raspberry tea and not sweet tea, and he looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language! From then on I stuck with Dr. Pepper (when available) or Coke. You can never go wrong with Coke.

But seriously, we had a great trip. The wedding was beautiful. The kids had loads of fun. Madison and Cassandra (the grooms niece) had so much fun being flower girls that they decided going down the aisle once wasn't enough, so when they got to the front they turned around and went back to do it all over AGAIN! Too funny! Besides the couple of hours in the ER for Madison's dislocated elbow everything thing was great. The first thing Jacob said when we landed in Birmingham was that he missed Aunt Jo Jo.

Here are some pictures I took during the festivities.

More Bees and Graduation

Here are some pictures from Saturday's playoff game against the Blue Claws. The program was very cute and the things they have learned are just amazing. I took a TON of pictures of Jacob, because, well, he is my baby and he was graduating. Me, being the planner that I am, thought that I had everything under control and all planned out for a smooth and stress free party. You see Jacob was supposed to have a baseball game at 1:00. Maddie's party was at 3:30. Which in my mind gave me plenty of time to watch Jacob's game, pick-up the birthday cake, and get home WAY before anyone showed up for the festivities. Well...think again! It had rained that morning and it was still drizzling at about 11 when Kelly called and said that they would be able to come to the party after all. And then she asked the dreaded question..."what time has Jacob's game been moved to?" I had NO CLUE that the games had been moved back two hours. Which meant that our once 1:00 game and suddenly became a 3:00 game! I wasn't upset that Michael and Jacob were going to miss the party, I was distraught that I was going to miss the game. Oh well, Michael linced me after what seemed like every play and kept me up-to-speed on the game. It wasn't the same as being there, but it was a close second (well, not really, but I am still trying to be optimistic about the whole thing). The party was fun even though we had to move everything indoors. And our baseball crew arrived just as Maddie was finishing up her gifts. Here are a few pictures from the party.

Now on to Baseball...Yes, Bert, this one's for you.

The Bees are holding their own this season. So just in case the next time your child has to have a q-tip that is a mile long shoved up his nose so far that it bleeds for a flu test, you'll know. Just have him (and it cannot be your spit or the spit of your husband) spit on the blood and let it sit. You don't even have to rub it. It just magically disappears! And yes, by the way, the flu test was positive! So now we have Tamiflu-o-plenty at our house.

The Tooth Fairy Cometh

Before...

During...

After...

As you can see, the tooth fairy has been very busy at our house this week. Jacob pulled one tooth on Tuesday night. I thought it was going to be a struggle because it was barely hanging on and he didn't want to touch it, but bribery works wonders when "pop-pops" are involved. Then last night Jacob was laying on the couch, minding his own business, when Madison decided that Jacob wasn't paying her enough attention. So she grabbed his face and in the process she grabbed his tooth too. Maybe she will be a dentist...who knows! I am just so glad that I got some really good pictures of his smile before all of this took place.

Been a while...

WOW! It has been a while. A lot has happened since I last posted. I won't try to post every detail, I'll just hit the "high" spots. Christmas was lots of fun. Of course with kids every day is fun. We all got lots of stuff, we are truly blessed not only with material things but with the things that count... family, both blood and church, friends, and so many other things!

Jacob is playing Upwards basketball. At first he was very excited. Now, not so much. What is sad is that he has the ability to be a good player but I think he lacks the enthusiasm. It's just not his LOVE, not like baseball. Either way, I still enjoy going to his games and practicing taking pictures. Here's one that I took recently.

I love how everyone is blurry except Jacob. Which is what I was trying to do. I took a photography class at church this past fall and this is one of the techniques that we learned. I took him a couple of weeks ago to a park here in town to get some pictures before he loses any more teeth. It was just me and him and I got some really good pictures, so much so that I had American Shutterbug print a 16x20 of this

And it was just in time. He lost another tooth Tuesday.

Madison is getting so big. She has tee-teed in the potty several times and sometimes she will volunteer to go on her own. Which means that she is running thru the house pulling her clothes off yelling "I tee-tee in potty" then followed by "I want candy!". She has started talking more in sentences now. One of my favorites is "I hab it" (translation: "I have it" or "Let me have it"). She still loves Jacob and plays just as rough with him as he does her. I wanted to take a picture of Jacob the other night after he lost his tooth and she had to have her picture taken, too.

As you can see, I am working on the look of the blog. That was one of the reasons that I haven't posted in a while. I know it sounds crazy but everytime I thought about posting all I could think of was how I didn't like it's looks and then I would get distracted. So I figured if I could design a Christmas card then I could design a banner, too. So here it is. I am still trying to figure out how to get the picture to not look so pixelly( if that's a word). I think I have a program that will help but until then this is what I will stick with. Maybe later I can try to design my whole page. I have it in my head but just don't have the know-how to produce it.

Thanksgiving Feast Celebration!

Today was the annual Thanksgiving Feast Celebration at Jacob's Preschool. I know...two posts in one day. But I just had to write this down before I forgot. Yesterday while picking up Jacob and Jack from preschool I hear that my 5 year old son is getting married! Yep, seems that Jacob has a girlfriend and they are getting married. Her name is Morgan. And not only that, after they get married they are going to have a baby. And it's a girl. What's even funnier is the length to which they have planned. You see Morgan has a sister named Madison. So the baby will have two Aunt Madisons. But have no fear they have already figured out that one will be called Aunt Madison and the other will be called Aunt Maddie! I asked Jacob when they were planning on getting married and he said they would wait until they had "grown up". I was glad to hear that! This morning I was telling Michael about the whole marriage thing and Jacob looks at me and says "we're just practicing right now"!

Halloween Happenings

Halloween has come and gone. The kids had sooo much fun! We started out the Halloween festivities (I refuse to call it a holiday because it is not a day I normally get off from work, therefore it is not a "holiday") by carving our pumpkins. Jacob decided he wanted a Captain Hook pumpkin. He then "helped" Madison pick out Pablo from the Backyardigans for her pumpkin. Here are our pumpkin pics...

I also carved an "Old Smokey" pumpkin for our neighbors that I didn't get a picture of. I know, I know...it goes against everything in me as an Alabama fan. But they are HUGE Tennessee fans and they are really good friends. I do have a confession...I don't think I could have carved that pumpkin if we hadn't beat them the weekend before. (Roll Tide!)

The next night we had our Trunk or Treat at our church. Maddie was "Big Al" (or I guess I should say "Little Al") and Jacob was "Captain Hook".

My favorite "trunk" was the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". Christie was the witch, David was the lion, and they had their trunk decorated as the wardrobe. Best part...they served hot chocolate! Here's a good picture of David. Unfortunately I didn't get one of the witch or the wardrobe.

Jacob decided Wednesday morning that he didn't want to be Captain Hook anymore. He wanted to be Darth Vader. He eventually decided to be Red Power Ranger after realizing his Darth Vader suit was still too big. Maybe next year. Then that night we had our annual hayride through the neighborhood. The kids had fun trick or treating. Maddie even got the hang of it, although her favorite part was the "ride".

I Don't Dance - HSM2 (Movie Version)

Just call me Chad...
At our house High School Musical 2 is BIG! Jacob and Madison both LOVE IT! Jacob is really into Troy, even wants to dress like him in his black wind pants and black shirt. Maddie loves to hear the music and dance. Jacob even knows some of the moves to the dances (Maddie tries to follow along, too, which makes for some great entertainment at the house). So needless to say we watch HSM2 a lot! My favorite part is the baseball scene when Ryan is trying to get Chad to be in the year end musical and Chad refuses, saying "I don't dance".

I love the song. Like the beat, like the lyrics, and it has a baseball theme. Why wouldn't I love it? It's one of those songs that you can't sit still when you hear it. Michael, being the one who has to find fault with every TV show or movie, is not a big fan of the scene. Too many errors in the scene. I'll have to admit there are some aspects of the scene that are a bit "off". Besides the obvious ones, the fact that all through the movie Chad dances but all of a sudden he "don't dance". Cracks me up. But never would I have ever dreamed that I, too, would share Chad's sentiments. Not with dancing. With singing. Sunday morning after church, our worship leader, Tom, made a comment to me that I should start singing with the praise team at church. My reply was, you guessed it, "I DON'T SING". I couldn't believe that those words came out of my mouth. I mean I sing, but I don't SING. I don't read music. I'm not an alto. I'm not a soprano. I am a follower. I sing whatever I hear. Sometimes its alto, soprano, tenor, harmony, whatever. A lot of times its all of those in one song. I just follow along. And I'm not saying it's good (just glad that God's ears aren't like ours.) Obviously Tom has never sat in front of me at church or he would have probably agreed with me.

As many times as I have seen the movie I never understood what Chad was saying...until Sunday. Now I totally get "I Don't Dance".

Homecoming

For those of you that don't get to visit the Capstone very often...This is especially for Andrea. Which to Jacob and all other 5 year olds waiting to play t-ball it's all the same. Last night was their first game. He, along with his other teammates, were so excited. They won their first game 10-8. Jacob had 2 hits, scored twice, and had a double play. He had a great time, to say the least! Today is his 5th birthday, so the team snack will be birthday cupcakes, baseball cupcakes, to be exact! Really kinda uneventful ( and I was glad). He was very excited!!! So that night I had to hunt for his tooth fairy bank that Michael's mom had given him eons ago. The next morning the tooth fairy had left Jacob a baseball tooth card with $7 inside. I know, I know... $7 is a strange number but there is a reason. He got a $5 bill and a $2 bill. The fairy always left me a $2 bill and I wanted to continue that tradition. So he is saving the $2 bill in his bank and he can spend the other $5.

Now on to the Skid Row part of the post...while out playing in the rain last Saturday night Madison got into a little fight with the sidewalk. She did not win. Poor thing her nose looked awful! I didn't get a picture of it before the big scab came off because I didn't have my camera for a week (that's a whole other story) but here's one of her yesterday with her nose still red.

Back from vacation and lots of changes

We recently returned from Orange Beach. This was Jacob and Madison's first trip to the beach. Jacob loved every aspect of the beach except for the walk to the ocean. You see, even though we stayed on the beach we still had a long walk to the water and he said "it takes too long to get there". He would have been just fine with going to the pool. Except at night. Then he was ready to go catch sand crabs and any other creature on the sand. He especially liked going up to complete strangers and asking them "ya'll caught anything?". Maddie liked the beach and playing in the sand but wasn't real crazy about the water "coming up to get her". Michael was in class all day so it was just me a the chitlins during the day. We did get to go on a dinner cruise that was a lot of fun. Michael has some of the pictures that we took on his flickr account. But here is my fav...

Other updates with JR and MR...
Jacob has a loose tooth and with good reason...there is another tooth that is coming in right behind it. He loves to show me how he can wiggle his tooth and frankly it wigs me out!

Maddie has learned some new words and loves to fake being hurt when you try to take something away from her. She starts screaming "ooowww, ooowwww". Such a drama queen. Last night I heard Jacob telling her to SIT. I went into the kitchen and miss priss was sitting in the middle of the kitchen table.

In other news...there have been a lot of changes at work. You can read about those changes here. I have a new boss, new (and bigger) office, new work hours (7-4) and a new job title. Actually its not a glamorous as it sounds. I am still doing most of the same things that I did before but it is taking some time to adjust to the new digs. But I like the job that I do, love my new office and work hours, and like the people that I work with and that's all that matters!

And tonight I will start getting ready for a Bridesmaids Brunch that will be at our house for Lindsay. She is such a sweet person and we (me, Tes, and Emily) wanted to do something special for her and her 'maids before the big day. It will be loads of fun!

Bike Riding

My Rammblings

OK...after much duress...I, too, have entered the blogging world. For a longtime I have been a lurker and have even posted on others' blogs on some occasions. Sometimes I have thought IF I had a blog I would write about "this" or "that" and sometimes I have thought I would have nothing to blog about. Anyway...here it goes...my attempt at blogging.

With all of that said, last night Jacob learned to ride his bike without training wheels. This is all thanks to neighborhood friend Jack Hill who learned to ride his bike on Saturday. Andrew, another neighborhood friend, also learned to ride last night. Shout out to Mary (Jack's mom) for being a great teacher and to her trusty assistant, Johnny! I will try to post pictures, if I can figure that out!

Jacob and Mary

As for Madison, she is walking EVERYWHERE! She is a lot of fun and LOVES her big brother.
